PITTSBURGH, Jan. 21, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Amneal Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: AMP), a specialty biopharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative medicines to improve health and longevity, today announced that the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted final approval for its approval for its abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) for Strattera (atomoxetine), a new non-stimulant antidepressant with significant market presence in the U. market. This approval is supported by data from a Phase 3 clinical trial conducted in patients with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and in adults with comorbid depression.
Strattera was the first FDA-approved non-stimulant medicine for ADHD and comorbid depression in the U. and was approved for use by many other countries worldwide. The first FDA-approved ADHD medication, Strattera, has also received final approval in Europe and the United States, with the first-ever FDA approval of the drug for ADHD.
This approval is a significant milestone for Strattera, and it will provide the drug with a new and more potent mechanism of action that will benefit many patients. The drug is already being developed and is expected to be FDA-approved for the treatment of ADHD in the U.
The drug was developed to address the primary focus of ADHD patients' attention and impulse control issues. Unlike the stimulant medication, Strattera has a unique mechanism of action which means that it can be a more effective treatment option for ADHD.
"Our data shows that patients who are diagnosed with ADHD with comorbid depression have a higher incidence of ADHD symptoms compared to patients without comorbid depression," said Robert J. Weisblatt, CEO and Founder of Amneal Pharmaceuticals. "We are pleased to further evaluate the potential impact of Strattera on our patients, and we look forward to recommending this next approval as soon as possible."
